It has been a whole year since I even wanted to blog; But what a way to start back up by honoring my girl on her 3rd birthday. Happy Birthday to my Riley girl and to all of her litter mates, (Blush, Reba, Ellie, Lucas, Max & Koda).
We took a 4 mile run this morning, Riley loves going running with me on Saturdays. Today was no different. She was all about the hunt for bunnies and squirrels and kind of bird that crossed out path. It makes my run a little off but today is her birthday so we let it slide for one day. I was able to think about what I wanted to note in this blog. Not all of my readers (family and friends) are on Facebook so this is a good way for me to give a quick update on Riley’s 3rd year.
Riley continued to be a little busy girl in her 3rd year. She traveled a whole bunch and even moved into a new home. She traveled every month in 2015 either long trips or to shows for weekends. We drove to the Weimaraner Nationals in St. Louis as our first long trip together in May. It went fantastic! We also drove up to Pennsylvania, New Jersey & New York for dog shows and to visit friends and family for a couple of weeks in the fall. Riley got to see a few of her litter mates on those trips and I think she still adores her sister Blush. I guess spending a few extra weeks together sealed their friendship. She was interested in the cats behind the door at her granny’s house and was a good house guest when we stayed with friends along the way. She rode great in the car and is such a pleasure to travel with. (I think it is because after getting her at 11 weeks we had to drive 1100 miles with her. The car is just a bed to her). She is the best on road trips.
In September we went on a week beach vacation with 6 other weims in Cape San Blas Florida (Dog friends ask me about this place – you can take your pets!!! Here is link.). An amazing place to spend your time. Up in the panhandle of Florida. The dogs were on the beach all day snoozing under tents and swimming for hours!
And in late November she got a new friend, Argus, who moved in and has stuck around to become her new bestie.
Once the show season died down a bit in December we spent some time working on obedience and learning some hunt training things. That is an ongoing process. She has gotten a lot better with her Whoa and her retrieve to hand (if no other dog is around) but there is plenty of room for improvement.
In January she earned her Champion title, a labor of love right there to get her to that point. As much as she likes to show, she just took a bit more time and a lot of my patience (that I was VERY short on last year). So my deepest thanks and love to Kelly Whitney for saving me at times when I was about to just walk away and handling her with love always. Winning got Riley a bird launcher to train with, I am sure she is thrilled because hunting is what her heart is about. She is just about hunting for herself still and we are working on that.
And just a few weeks shy of her 3rd birthday, Riley got her RATN title. It is a Barn Hunt title and she earned it right in a row with qualifying times and even two 2nd place times and a 1st place time to finish her title. See video below (taken by Stacey Perez, thank you).
All this hunting has proven that her real passion is just that, the hunt. In the past year she has brought me (or Janet) 3 rabbits, 3 opossums, 6 turtles, 1 black snake, 1 fruit rat, unknown count of lizards and as of 2 days ago a frog (at the foot of my bed). As sweet and pretty as she looks, don’t let it fool you, she is all for the hunt all the time. I guess I just need to refocus and start to learn about it. So this year we are working on her Senior Hunter and some more Barn Hunt as well as some obedience. Happy 3rd birthday to my little pistol, my sassy and saucy little weimier girl.
